("I" means jackdied, "we" means jackdied pretending to speak for everyone)
Who and Why
Who and Why are the same. All the email conversations and IM'd links that got passed around between friends
were easy to lose so in 2003 I started putting them all here. If anyone else cares to read them, neat.
What gets posted here is the more interesting and at least better spell checked stuff, but most posts still start life
in email. I'm glad that some people I don't know find the result interesting (and we appreciate most of the emails) but it a bonus and not the point.
Standards and Practices
- Punishments will consist of fines, admonitions, and expulsions
- If you purchase a cat you will be expelled. If you post a picture of a cat it will be assumed you bought a cat
- The blog is mainly read by people you know. Don't assume that in a post.
- "Me Too" is not a post, it is a quickie
- "What I had for lunch" is not an acceptable post. Unless it involves a crockpot and instructions.
- Personal things it is OK to post about include: gadgets, poker, guns, and anything you can draw out into a more general theme (see previous)
- Quickies are quickies, anything goes. Just keep the weekly quickie dump shorter than intervening mainpage posts.
FAQ
- Why aren't there comments?
Because you can start your own blog, that's why. Seriously, comments stink for the non-trivial: you have to learn a new editor, forgo spell checking,
and risk your two bits being lost by editorial diktat or someone not paying their $5.95/mo bill. I post comments on other people's blogs but when I really care I send them an email or make a post out of it. No comments also means no trolls and no time cleaning up spam.
- Why the anonymity? What is up with the dead and alive thing?
It is a very weak anonynmity. Google will tell you exactly what jackdied's real name is. Chances are if you are reading this blog you actually know one of us in person. The other guys were just named to fit the theme.
- No really, what's up with the name?
Historically on UNIX and UNIX like systems user account names were eight characters. If you went to the trouble of googling my name (this may require pencil and paper) and you write down the first eight characters of my nameall will be revealed. Plus, the domain name was available. As for the other posters, the names may not be as much of a direct translation but it hardly matters because the S&P mandates the genera.
- What do you do with Amazon referral fees?
The pennies we make go towards hosting and ammunition.
Boys, this page is under CVS. go nuts.
