I'm very unhappy with XBox Live

They deleted my account. It was probably due to inactivity - reports that I haven't logged in since June - but I paid my $50 for a 1 year gold membership in January which should have carried me into 2010. I received no email about pending deletions or actual deletion which is the least they could do considering I paid them money for the service. An unhelpful help page mentions that accounts created in 2008 or after will never be deleted for inactivity; unhelpful because my account was created in 2007.
So I'm pretty much boned. I can't backup my saved games and profile because the fact that I paid for some content ("DLC" is the jargon) causes the box to hang when I try to back it up it while being a not-logged-in non-person. I don't really care that my "achievements" are burned but the whole ordeal leaves me very, very sour.
This isn't just a wibble on my console; my account is gone. When I try the "lost password" prompt on the website it says that email addy is invalid. The last email I received was a promotional email in August.
