FX is doing what SHO and HBO used to do, their two new shows Starved and It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia are quite good. Starved, a show loosely about three guys and a girl in an eating disorder support group is pretty good; they mine the unplumbed laughs of bulimia in addition to doing the regular fast-talking sitcom thing. The second show was tied in their first/pilot episodes but has pulled away. If you liked the all-banter style of Sports Night you'll love IASIP (sorry, I can't think of a more original shorthand). Acting is sharp and sweet, the writing is tight, and if you grew up near Philly (I did) the everyday barely believable script is quite believable.
FX's Over There should get a mention. It is the most high profile in their lineup but three episodes in the show is collapsing. It is about the Iraq war but it holds no red meat for the right or the left. A muddle of positions with no likeable characters played by no talent hacks (now I feel like a paid critic, high order vitriol).
Good news on other fronts, The Aristocrats got picked up by Lowes after being dumped by its last distributor. It is now playing in Boston and a friend says it is worth the billing. If you haven't heard the movie is documentary of 100 tellings of a joke who's only purpose is to be told as blue as possible as novelly as possible. Good stuff and I quite look forward to Sarah Silverman's version (and her Jesus is Magic on DVD).
Can I throw in an anecdote from the weekend? Thanks, I'd love to. Friday included a Women's Studies major going for her PHD telling a story about a creepy math teacher (a universal experience) saying to her "you might feel better about yourself if you wore a dress." If you didn't read shock and venom into that story you should have. Which makes Saturday a bit awkward for me. Saw her again but this time in a flattering sundress. I commented positively expecting either a punch in the face or some after hours love (I got neither).
NB, has anyone else noticed that "awkward" has two unlikely W's jammed against another consonant? Awkward indeed (it looks extra silly when capitalised).
