Some Elephants Have Short Memories

After the elections I called on Republicans to start behaving like adults because they lost and the Democrats to start behaving like adults because they didn't win. No Dice. Republicans have elected Trent Lott as minority whip. Lott is the consumate Washington insider, horse trader, and pork supporter. Way to send a message guys. If that weren't bad enough the current whip (Roy Blunt) has called for doing nothing and winning in 2008 by aping the Democratic strategy of 2006 - do nothing positive and just highlight the bad side of the opposition. This is a political strategy and not a governing strategy. "be the less visible scumbag" may be good politics but it isn't the way to build and keep a majority.

The Dems are ginning up their own deft deaf agenda. It has started with blocking the Bolton appointment to the U.N. for the same reasons they blocked it the first time. No matter that he has served the U.S. well in his recess apointment - he isn't their guy and he has to go. There has been some signaling that the broad agenda is just as deaf but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and wait until it happens.

All this comes as no surprise to people that have read Hayek: on average a job will be filled by the people who will get the most out of it and not the people who will do it best. Over a trillion dollars flows through D.C. every year and less than a thousand men hold the reins. Some do it for personal gain and some do it for personal vanity (I'm looking at you: Senators from MA) but very few do it for the people they represent.

I was hoping the party that better represents my interests (the Republicans) would run a back-to-basics program and maybe represent me again. Instead they seem to be running on a platform of "we will represent you slightly less poorly." The morons lost on politics as usual and they are hoping that politics as usual will save them. Argh.
