My car's computer went nuts and decided to kill the headlights and lock the ABS brakes. Which was neat because it did it as I merged onto Route 2. Some smoking, screeching, and then an hour of sitting around later it is towed.

Not a big deal but I'll have to take a five dollar cab to Sunday league tomorrow.

[Yes, I did try power cycling it by disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. No Dice. The tow truck driver was very helpful: he tried moving the car and then announced that the 'lectrics were funny and the brakes were toast. Uhhh, good call.]

Update The Saab dealer called. The two failures (lights & breaks) were unrelated except in time; it wasn't a computer failure at all. How both headlights burn out at exactly the same time is left unexplained. Only one of the breaks was locked and it was a cable failure. The total amount of work they suggested would cost around $3k. I had him itemize it with explanations and as I wrote it down I put a question mark next to all the items that sounded like make-work. I had him re-list just the items that are required to pass inspection and - surprise! - they comprised the whole set of items without a question mark. So the bill will be in the $1k range.

Not bad considering the only maintenance the car has needed in the three years I've owned it is oil changes (on a car nearing 100k miles!). A far cry from my first car, an Alfa Romeo with 25k road miles costing $6k, which required $2k/year in repairs just to run. And unlike the Alfa I don't need to carry a tool box in the trunk because nothing under the hood of the Saab flies apart at regular intervals. The intake manifold exploded off the top of the engine so frequently the underside of the hood had an impression of it. Italy can't make a car that lasts but man can they make a car that goes. Oh, and the Alfa was as useless as a motorcycle in the snow.

Final Got the car back. I didn't have a chance to google the dealer (Herb Chambers) before it was towed but it looks like other people had a similar experience. this guy humorously said they told him "we found a unicorn pooping in your filters." My bill was mostly labor ($680 worth) which means someone spent a while day on it (suuure). Customer service was good, everything was prompt. I can't complain.
