I Don't Heart Huckabee

Don't get me wrong - Mike Huckabee would make a great neighbor. His lawn would always be cut, his leaves raked, and his children tidy and quiet. Huckabee would be an awful Neighborhood Association President because he would demand that your lawn would always be cut, your leaves raked, and your children tidy and quiet. Maybe he lacks imagination or empathy but Huck's record is that of a guy who can't separate what is good for him and what is good for everybody.

If you want a Republican president that gets weak in the knees for phrases like "for the children" or "for the common good" Huck might be your man. But to let this guy be POTUS would be a disaster for anyone that doesn't think exactly like Huck - Christian evangelical, economically illiterate, and rabidly pro-unicorn and rainbows. As anyone who knows me can tell you: I hate Unicorns.

I was going to add lots of links about Huck's very non-conservative and extremely non-libertarian past but due to his recent surge in the polls other people have done it for me. Like them I wrote Huckabee off early and was shocked to see him take a lead in the polls.

None of this would be necessary if there weren't actual people supporting Huckabee in the first place, but there are. I recently talked to a past Pat Toomey volunteer who likes Huck because she thinks he's the most electable (to be fair she does like Fred better, but Fred is all but out of the race). Huck is Southern and a former governor, usually good indicators in a presidential race. Fine, those things might help pick up independents but if Huck gets the nomination this registered Republican will be voting for Hillary come November.

Hillary? Really? Normally I don't like political calculations but I don't think Huck will be much different than Hillary and I'd rather the other guys go down for government-by-whimsy. (I'd vote for Fred, or Romney, and maybe Guliani. I'd sit on my hands for McCain.).

P.S. Just in - Jim Pinkerton says Huck can win. I like Pinkerton but this is no Carter versus Reagan matchup. At best if it is Obama vs Huckabee it will be Carter(D) vs Carter(R) and everyone loses.
