Weakness in Fred's Organization?
Jan 08 2008, 00:10 EST [updated Jan 08 2008, 01:35 EST]
So I donated cashey-money to Fred Thompson five days ago. I'm probably the kind of guy they want to spam with talking points, ask to be a warm body at rallies, and that kind of thing. I know all the political organizations have more work than they can possibly do during the early primaries but ... the only thing I've received is an email saying my gift qualified me for a signed portrait which will be arriving sometime*.

I'm not a marketing genius but where is the call to action? I donated less than the FEC approved, unconstitutional, maximum - so where is the pat on the back and a request for more cash?

On the Fred website there is a rally-locater and it shows I'm within 50 miles of the nearest Fred events (in Manchester, NH). I haven't showed up for anything because I haven't even been asked.

Granted Thompson is now focusing on his strong point in South Carolina and not nearby New Hampshire where he is weak or my town of Boston where he is persona-non-grata. But still .. I can't help but think someone has dropped the ball here. In marketing speak I am more than just a hand raiser (someone who has showed interest). I am a customer and I could be a repeat customer if just shown a little love. Or at least generate good word of mouth [if shown a little love].

Seriously, I have an 8"x10" glossy "signed" by George & Laura Bush on my fridge from the last election and I never gave them a dime. I got it merely because I was a likely donor based on my past or current subscriptions to the WSJ/National Review/The Weekly Standard. I might not be a whale but I'm at least a fish - get on the ball folks!

* I think that is what the following email, reprinted in full, means

Thank you for your contribution to Friends of Fred Thompson. Your contribution of $250 or more qualifies you for our limited edition Steve Penley print. Please allow 10-14 business days for delivery.

    Thank you for your support.

Wait .. what? Is the pic by this Steve Penley [warning: background music]. He does seem conservative by his bio and choice of subjects (Churchill, Washington, Reagan) but his style is a very pop. Give me a classicist like the (now deceased) Walker Hancock who did the Reagan bust and the achingly beautiful Pennsylvania WWII Railroad Workers Memorial.
