PA Cops Don't Know the Law

Well, cops aren't lawyers so they can't know all the laws but they should know the basics. Like not arresting people for open carry of guns. Or not confiscating guns for being "un-registered;" PA law prohibits a gun registry - the cops have tried to make a defacto one anyway and it is full of holes.

The backstory is that some pro-gun people went to a restaurant with their families while carrying openly. Some nervous nellie called the cops. The cops that arrived were fuzzy on the gun laws and just ignored some easier ones they have certainly been trained on (you don't have to show ID to cops, just give your name and residence).

If it goes to court the police and DA will lose. Even if it doesn't go to court the police could be sued which would cause them to educate their officers on the law so they don't get sued again.

I am all for open carry displays. At best stories like this get news coverage and make everyone more aware of their rights and the law. At worst those that fled NY and NJ will shriek and try to get the law changed. The latter is problematic but if you can't enjoy the current law then what does it matter if it gets changed? Plus the PA constitution is unambiguous and would be very, very hard to change:

The right of the citizens to bear arms in defence of themselves and the State shall not be questioned.
