The gist is that allowing people to choose is fine as long as they pay the price for their choices and don't expect others to bail them out. That reminds me of this one from Tom Robbin's Still Life with Woodpecker

There's a tendency today to absolve individuals of moral responsibility and treat them as victims of social circumstance. You buy that, you pay with your soul.
