Chasing the Sun
Aug 16 2008, 04:55 EDT
According to weather.com sunrise in Boston is 5:53am and in Philadelphia it is 6:14am. That is a difference of 21 minutes which means the sun moves 15 miles a minute as the car drives (screw the crow). The difference is the result of Boston being more Northerly (hence having a longer day in the Summer) and Easterly (hence having the sun hit it earlier) but thinking about which one contributes most makes my head hurt. If you think the answer is easy then please explain to me why the sunsets are only 12 minutes apart instead of 21 like the sunrises.

The "chase" in the headline is me driving from Boston to Philly this morning for some good house painting fun*. Normally I like doing the Midnight Run to avoid traffic but I have a misaligned headlight and I like to speed at +15 to +25. So I'm driving at daybreak instead (straylight run?). I haven't received a speeding ticket since 1992 and I'd like to keep it that way. My best advice for not getting a ticket is do not drive a red car. Cops are like bulls and magpies -- red cars make them angry.

* Occasional manual labor is fun, esp with family. Habitual manual labor is a job. If there was no fun involved and we were fully rational we'd be willing to pay up to several grand to get the cottage painted instead of doing it ourselves (assuming we could all just work an extra two paid days at our regular jobs instead).
