Michelle Obama Still Isn't Helping

I just caught the DNC highlight show on CSPAN. Michelle's speech (the bit they highlighted) went like this:
The path of history has met with the tide of hope - that is why I love this country.
This may be an improvement over "For the first time in my life I am proud of my country [because my husband is running]" but it isn't a big one. If the Obama staff was smart they would do the same thing they have done with Obama and keep her remarks scripted and make sure those remarks are poll tested by people who aren't already Obama supporters.

NB, never ever refer to the inevitable tide of history. It reads as "I *heart* Marx" or at best "I *heart* Fukuyama."

Nancy Pelosi said she is the first "Italian American" to do something - speaker of the house maybe? *yawn* Appealing to ethnic pride only works as a tactic when your ethnicity is waaay underrepresented. I have no idea how my people - German Americans - are under or over represented in politics but I couldn't give a crap if they are or aren't. Heck, German Americans have a plurality in the U.S. - a little known fact because our law is a mix of English and Scottish law. At the end if it isn't my brother who is running for office I couldn't give two shits about his genes. I'll watch his politics.

Ted Kennedy: "Every American will have health care as a right and not a privilege." Maybe I'm a trog but free health care sounds a lot more like a privilege than a right. Free gasoline, free housing, or free food would be neat too; it would extend my life, embellish my existence, and possibly make me vote for the free-givers but it is still "free" in the sense of "make someone else pay for it."

Michelle's full speech was better than the highlights. Very heavy on the blue collar pulled-up-by-your-bootstraps. Then finished with a very crappy "how the world should be." I have an instant dislike of anyone who prophecies how the world should be because the most vocal and hopeful of that group tend to be the people who ignore the entirety of human history.

Poverty, corruption, and vice are the natural state of man. Anything more than that is special and must be defended. If you think anything higher is the default then you really don't know enough people.

Plus: Michelle says Obama will provide FREE STUFF. Neato.
