Jem != Jen

I just found out that a woman I know is named "Jem" and not "Jen." I must have heard other people, including her husband, refer to her by name hundreds of times over the last five years. Thankfully the "Massachusetts pronunciation guide" says the names are phonetically identical: Guh-schwa-shmertz. I think I could have called her "Jim" for the last five years and everyone would have just assumed it was my funny Mid-Atlantic accent.
PS, if she thought I was calling her "Jen" she would have called me on it; she's not a timid wallflower by any stretch.
PPS, "Shmertz" is a not a technical term. It's something I just made up to describe the catch-all nounish sound folks up here use at the end of a word.
